Alexis Bragagnolo

Why did you choose tourism and hospitality and why TRSM?
I am a Toronto girl, born and raised, and I never really saw myself leaving this city anytime soon. So University applications started in the Winter of my Grade 12 and I decided to start looking at Toronto Universities and I found Ted Rogers School of Management and then I found Hospitality and Tourism Management. I am lucky to have found this school and to have had that “Aha!” moment at such a young age. I don’t really know how to explain it…Which is funny because as a research assistant it is my job to explain things!

How did you become a student researcher at HTMResearch?
I was approached by Dr. Rachel Dodds to help her with a literature review and the rest is history!

What studies have you worked on and what are you researching right now?

I have worked on two separate things so far for Dr. Rachel Dodds. One was a review of the amount of waste produced at festivals (Which is a disgustingly large amount!!!!). The other was understanding extrinsic and intrinsic motivations when it comes to environmentally responsible behaviour.

What do you enjoy most about conducting research?

Don’t get me wrong, I never really saw myself being a research assistant. I do love learning though and in the past month I have learned so much that I can apply to different situations in the industry.

What does the Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Research mean to you?
I am fairly new to this Institute but the energy you get from sitting and doing work with other Research Assistants and colleagues is contagious! Everyone is just so excited about everything… It’s fun!

If you could give one piece of advice to students who are interested in conducting research at HTMResearch, what would it be?
Bite the bullet! It is a learning process and everyone in this Institute is willing to lend you a helping hand; Even if it is just bouncing ideas off of each other.

What are your major interests outside of HTMResearch?
I am very interested in the hotel industry. Everything from the urban planning designs to the operational and strategic landscape of it all! The whole industry will be changing in the upcoming years and I am excited to be a part of it!
